“My dad was a neurosurgeon. He was disabled in the late 90’s but went back into pain medicine. From a young age I saw how medicine can change someone’s life for the better!”

Dr. Durrani set out to medical school in Erie, PA with neurosurgery as his path.

His residency took him to Dayton and he spent three years learning about neurosurgery before the program announced it was closing and moving to Columbus. At that point, Dr. Durrani made the tough decision to stop his neurosurgery residency and pursue neurology instead.

“A lot more hospitals were becoming trauma centers and I didn’t see myself doing trauma neurosurgery for the rest of my life. I always liked the neurology part of medicine, and it seemed like the obvious choice.”

He completed his Neurology residency through Grandview Hospital (Kettering Health Dayton) and joined Dayton Center for Neurological Disorders after graduation.

Durrani says this is an exciting time to be a neurologist.

“For the longest time there was nothing we could do about a lot of neurological issues but that is changing at a rapid pace. Now we can say this is what the problem is, and these are your options.”

He finds all areas of neurology fascinating such as stroke, Parkinson’s, Dementia/Alzheimer’s, headaches, and Myasthenia Gravis.

“The variety makes the day interesting. When you see everything, you must stay up to date on everything which helps me treat my patient more holistically. So many issues go hand in hand,” said Durrani.

Dr. Durrani is passionate about patient education. He has written two books on neurologic issues to help patients and their families better understand their diagnosis. He has also started his own YouTube channel that is full of quick, easy to understand videos.

“I know it’s overwhelming and scary to get one of these diagnoses. There is so much information being thrown at them, it’s hard to remember it all and they will probably have questions after the visit. That’s why these quick hits are so important.”

Dr. Durrani met his wife, Teresa while in residency in Dayton. He spent a lot of his free time racing cars, woodworking and shooting on the range, but he has since slowed down a bit after the birth of their daughter. He now spends his free time hiking, going to the pool and traveling.

Dr. Durrani’s books can be found on Amazon if you search: The Patient’s Practical Guide: Alzheimer’s Disease and The Patient’s Practical Guide: Myasthenia Gravis. His YouTube channel can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/@theneurologychannel1
